Your Trek Check List

This is the straight dope. Here is a list of things to do for your trek so you can't go wrong. You are registered and made the deposit, what next?

We made it to the top!

A bit of glory at the top of the mountain

  1. Please read the material on the web site again.  Print it out if that is more convenient.  You are embarking on a real life wilderness adventure and not a theme park ride. Take it seriously when preparing and you will have the personal backup necessary to relax and feel confident in the wild.

    Read
physical conditioning and do it. Being in good shape at the beginning of your trek will mean more enjoyment and pleasure.

Read the weather section to be sure you have knowledge you will need to make good decisions. We sometimes get folks showing up in Sept dressed for July. Don't assume that the Northern New Mexico Rockies are warm desert. Think Alpine!

    Read the
    recommended clothing
. If you don't have what is needed, start shopping. There are sporting goods dealers on the net. Mail order is possible if you allow enough time. A good part of the clothing can be found in department stores.

Read the Safety Rules. These are for your benefit and will keep you from making mistakes that might subtract from your enjoyment of the wilderness. The Terms and Conditions that you agreed to require you to be familiar with these rules.

  2. Read the packing instructions. Get the stuff sacks, gather the clothing and other items and do a practice pack. Keep everything simple and practical. Make sure it fits and doesn't exceed the weight limit. Don't bring superfluous stuff because it will just get in the way when you are looking for important stuff and besides it will just clutter the tent and get dirty for nothing.

  3. Are all your reservations in order: airline, car rental, local accommodations?

  4. Bringing your own sleeping bag? See bag requirements.

  5. Remit the balance of your fee 30 days before your trek.

  6. Review the instructions you were given about the meeting place and time. Call El Paseo at the appointed time if you were instructed to do so.
